New Jersey Speeding Laws

If you got a traffic ticket in the state of New Jersey, you’re not alone. In 2015, drivers spent nearly $406 million on traffic tickets in the state of New Jersey, and the numbers look just as hefty every single year. Getting a speeding ticket is inconvenient, both financially and in the amount of time it takes out of your day. However, most people pay the ticket and move on. That’s because most drivers think that paying the ticket is their only option, or they believe that paying their ticket is the most efficient thing to do. In most cases, however, that is not the case. Considering the long-term cost of a ticket, like increased insurance rates and incurring points against your license, the price of your ticket is just the beginning of the struggles you’ll face thanks to your traffic ticket.

In most cases, it’s advisable and beneficial to fight your traffic ticket. You should learn a little bit about the basics of the law before heading to court. Additionally, you should hire a traffic attorney who can help you navigate the legal system and obtain the best possible outcome. The following information should help you accomplish both of those tasks.

New Jersey Points System

If you accumulate 12 total points against your license in the state of New Jersey, you will face license suspension. If you end up with three or more license suspensions in the span of three years, you will be listed as a habitual offender. Additionally, if you accumulate six or more points in the span of three years, you’ll pay an additional surcharge. You must pay surcharges every three years whenever you accumulate points, which is something relatively unique to the New Jersey points system. That’s not including the court fees you’ll have to pay, as well. It’s not hard to see that just a few points against your license can start to add up quickly, costing you time and money.

In New Jersey, you can get two points added to your license just for driving too slowly and blocking traffic. Three points will be added for any number of violations, including making an illegal U-turn or disobeying the left turn laws. If you pass illegally, you’re looking at three points, and depending on how fast you’re speeding you can get up to five points in a single ticket for speeding in New Jersey. You’ll also get five points added to your license for passing a stopped school bus. If you get into an accident that results in personal injury, you’ll suffer a whopping eight points against your license, not to mention any other points that could be added if you’re charged with speeding, reckless driving, or other violations.

You’ll be able to deduct three points off your license one year after the date of the violation if you haven’t accumulated any other violations. Additionally, you can take two points off your license by attending a driver training program, but you can only do that every two years, and you’ll have to pay for the training yourself.

Can You Fight a Speeding Ticket in New Jersey?

Yes, and considering the information above, it’s easy to see that fighting your ticket is almost always in your best interest. The inconvenience of getting a ticket is only the beginning. You’ll have to deal with increased insurance rates, points against your license, court fees, surcharges, and a heap of other expenses and inconveniences even if you only have one violation.
