What Can Happen If I Choose Not to Pay My Parking Tickets?

What Can Happen If I Choose Not to Pay My Parking Tickets?

Tickets are expensive and frustrating, and nobody likes to get them. You might be tempted not to pay the ticket and blow it off. After all, what are they going to do, right? Actually, choosing not to pay your ticket is almost always a mistake. Many serious consequences can follow the choice to refuse to pay for parking tickets or other fines related to traffic citations. State laws differ, but in most states, the following consequences can arise from a failure to pay.

Increased Fees

At a minimum, you’ll face increased fees. In some states, that increase can be very substantial. Even if other penalties are added, you may still have to pay extra just for being late and not paying your fees on time. Late or unpaid tickets will almost always mean more money out of your pocket, regardless of the other consequences that are piled on top of it. It’s very rare that you’ll get away with just a fine if you choose not to pay your ticket.

Additional Points

In some states, additional points will be added to your license, as well. Having more points added to your record is never a good thing. If you’re nearing suspension already, this could push you over the edge. However, as with the other consequences on this list, it’s very rare that you’ll only have to deal with the additional points. If your state doesn’t have a points system, you might be punished in some other way pursuant to the system your state has in place.

Suspension

Not paying your parking tickets can put you at a far greater risk of license suspension. In fact, most states have laws that require automatic license suspension for anyone who doesn’t pay their parking fees on time. License suspension can lead to serious consequences. It could leave you unable to get to work, to take your kids to school, or, if you’re in a rural area, could make getting groceries impossible. It could also cause you a lot of trouble in the future if you’re trying to get a car loan or purchase insurance. While you can usually apply for a hardship license, it might be more difficult to obtain that license if you outright refused to pay your parking ticket.
