New California Traffic Laws for 2020

New California Traffic Laws for 2020

A new year is upon us and for California drivers, this means a new set of traffic laws that went into effect on January 1, and some that will be effective later in the year and in 2021. New laws relating to bike riding through intersections and cannabis consumption by passengers in vehicles could have a major impact on California drivers who hit the road this year.

Unless otherwise noted, all new traffic laws went took hold on January 1, 2020.

Bike Turning Lane Law

As bike ridership increases, laws are being enacted to protect bicyclists on the road. Bicyclists are now allowed to ride straight through turn-only lanes at intersections as long as the traffic signal indicates that it is allowed for motor vehicles. The California Department of Transportation will be developing lane striping, signage, and intersection pavement markings to make the traffic flow clear.

Passenger Cannabis Consumption

Cannabis may not be consumed by passengers on buses, taxis, limousines, housecars, or campers. While passengers are no longer permitted to consume cannabis, an exemption for alcohol remains in place.

DMV Appointments

Appointments with the Department of Motor Vehicles are not allowed to be sold from one driver to another. DMV appointments are free and not meant to be profited from.

Wildlife Salvage Program

A pilot wildlife salvage program will authorize the California Fish and Game Commission to issue permits for the purpose of removing and recovering wildlife like deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, and wild pigs that have been killed in a collision with a vehicle, if the wild game meat is used for human consumption.

Foreign Service Drivers Licenses

Driver’s licenses for people in the United States Foreign Service and their spouses are valid while they are out of the state, and for an additional 30 days if honorably separated from service, or upon their return to California.

License Suspensions for Non-Vehicle Violations

California driving privileges cannot be suspended or delayed due to a conviction not involving a Vehicle Code violation, unless the offense occurred while using, or attempting to use, a motor vehicle.

Safety Measures for Used Tires

Tires that have been determined by visual inspection to be unsafe may not be installed on vehicles by automotive repair dealers. This law does not apply to tires that have been temporarily removed for repair, rotation, balancing or mounting that will be reinstalled on the vehicle.

Real ID for Domestic Air Travel

Starting on October 1, 2020, a standard California ID will not be sufficient to board domestic flights. A passport, military, another federally issued identification, or a California Real ID will be needed. Real IDs can be acquired in person at any DMV office. Documents proving identity, citizenship, and residency will be needed.

Points for Distracted Driving

Distracted driving penalties are set to increase next year. Using a handheld phone while driving is already illegal in California, but starting on July 1, 2021, drivers cited for a violation within 36 months of a previous condition will be assessed one point to their driving record.
